MPPerformance - Installation for MP Rear Sway Bar (Anti Roll Bar)
The Saab 900/9-3 rear axle is a one-piece hollow box section. It has 2 sway bars incorporated into it: one is a simple torsion bar running across the car, through the center of the axle; the second is a U-shape and bolted to the rear edge of the axle. It is this sway bar that is replaced by the uprated MP Performance sway bar. The MP Performance sway bar is supplied painted black, for purposes of illustration, the MP Performance sway bar featured in these instructions has been painted silver.
Parts Application: SAAB NG900 (93-98) & Classic 9-3 (98-03) Parts Needed: 13mm (1/2" AF) socket spanner.
Figure 1: The Old and the New Rear Sway Bars
Figure 1 shows the old and new rear sway bars for comparison. The new (silver) sway bar uses the original mounting points, but stands off from the axle slightly to give clearance for the thicker cross-section.
1.
You only have increase access at the rear of the car slightly to be able to change the sway bar. Ramps, pit or car hoist are ideal. If jacking the car up, raise each side equally so that there is no twist in the sway bar. Parking the car with the rear hanging over the edge of a kerb gives sufficient extra clearance.
Warning: Always supplement a jack with an axle stand before working underneath a car.

2.
The sway bar is bolted to the rear of the axle, just under the spring base, as shown in Figure 2. Undo the four 13mm (1/2" AF) bolts to remove the sway bar. The nuts for the mounting bolts are joined together and so do not need a spanner to keep them from turning.
3.
Lubricate the mounting bolts and offer up the new sway bar. Finger tighten a bolt at each end of the sway bar, then repeat with the second bolt at each end. Finally tighten the bolts to a torque of 24 Nm (18 lbf ft).
